Our History

Celebrating 50 years

1972 - 2022

1971 - Children's Workshop was founded by a group of parents and teachers who wanted a school to have its base in the solid learning principles of Maria Montessori, respecting children's needs and developmental periods, and yet offer the best possible resources for experiences and enrichment in the creative arts as well.

1972 - The summer of 1972 was spent finding a building, ordering materials and interviewing teachers. Space was rented in what is now the Unity Church building in Wauwatosa at 73rd and Milwaukee Avenue. The school was opened in the fall of 1972 with twelve children. Enrollment quickly grew as word of this unique environment got around.

1975 - Ellie, our current Montessori teacher, begins as a classroom teacher.

1976 - Tricia, current Lead Montessori teacher, begins as a Children's Workshop student.

1978 - Children's Workshop had to leave the location at Unity Church because the church wanted to expand its own education program. We started the 1978 school year located at Trinity Church on Sherman Boulevard in Milwaukee and began a very happy relationship with the Sherman Park Community.

1987 - Susan, the current School Coordinator, and classroom teacher, joins the staff.

2000 - After twenty years at our Sherman Park location, we again began the search for a location that would better meet our needs and the needs of the majority of the families now in the Children's Workshop community. The suggestion was made that we explore the possibilities back at Unity Church where it all began. Everything fell into place with great ease and in the fall of 2000 we came home to our original location 73rd and Milwaukee.

2001 - Tricia, our current Lead Montessori Teacher, begins teaching at Children's Workshop.

With our excellent staff, a strong and committed Board of Directors, and a classroom full of wonderful children, we look forward to many wonderful years here!
